Last night I was fortunate enough to watch two bands that I thoroughly enjoyed. Being the first time in a very long while since I’d been to what I would describe as a ‘local gig’ I wasn’t really sure what to expect for the most part. I knew that my friends band, The Xcerts were playing but not much else.
The first band presented themselves on stage as completely unprepared and unsure of themselves. Due to the structure of most of their songs I believed the first twenty seconds or so of their set to be a false start but I was to be proved wrong. Copy Haho are the sort of band that you don’t really expect to be on a show of this kind. They are however the sort of band that takes your full attention. The boys from Stonehaven blend the awkward pop sensibilities reminiscent of Pavement with the guitar and drum work of Pele and Don Caballero but the sparse yet distinct vocals keep them grounded on Scottish soil. If you think The Twilight Sad would be better if they stopped listening to Sonic Youth and used their guitars for more than feedback you should definitely give Copy Haho a chance. The Xcerts are three guys who I consider good friends. Their musical talent never ceases to amaze me and every time I see them it’s an experience. Their musical influences are eclectic, to the point where, on paper they would sound terrible but the coherence and refinement of their own unique sound is developed with every one of their songs. Their songs stomp and thrash through massive choruses like that on last single My Book Laughs but always the main concern is melody, a focus which crowns them as future radio fodder for the masses. New double A-side single Just Go Home/Aberdeen 1987 is released on November 19th through most independent retailers and iTunes. As above check them out in the music links on the right hand side of the page.
